Romaine Kuonen-Walz

Art is at the heart of it all. Everything else—space, encounter, craftsmanship, travel—grows from it.

With great joy, Romaine Kuonen-Walz opens the gallery and meeting space Spazio Walz.

Romaine Kuonen-Walz is an artist from Switzerland with family roots in southern Italy. Influenced by her artistic father, Gino Walz, she learned the craft of figurative painting from a young age. Shifts in perspective are central themes in her current work: different perceptions of hidden things in nature and in various habitats are transformed into new compositions through several stages of work—using acrylics, watercolors, oils, photography, and digital experiments on canvas and paper.

Influences from her own life story, emotions, and experiences nourish her paintings, as does the symbolism of legends and mythologies. She continuously develops her artistic skills through exchange with other artists in abstract and watercolor painting. The visual arts and theater have shaped her for decades. They are a medium of self-expression: mysticism, body language, and imagination are explored in performance, objects, and paintings. As a producer, she has brought art and performance productions to the stage—in Switzerland and abroad.

Since 2022, she has been working on contemporary art projects with Hadi MohammadKhani, who lives in Iran: art and performance are combined and presented in works of great radiance and energy. Connections between cultures and inspirations blur boundaries. Together, they received the International Prize for Innovation and Experimental Art from the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in Tbilisi and founded the association The Body Magic Group Switzerland. Her work is featured in the Musa Art Catalogue 2022, Rome, and in the Contemporary Art Catalogues 2023/2024.

Exhibitions and artist residencies have taken her to Beijing, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Chongqing, Chengdu, Pristina, Koszalin, and numerous other cities in Europe and Switzerland. She is a member of the Swiss Association of Professional Visual Woman Artists (SGBK) and winner of first prize in the Novumbasel Art Prize.

In addition to her artistic work, she has held leadership positions in international humanitarian non-profit organizations and was a long-time member of the cultural commission in Brig.

Spazio Walz

The Spazio Walz art space in Bern, is run by Romaine Kuonen-Walz. It is an experimental space, open to innovative ideas, artistic expressions, and collaborations. We believe in an art space that not only exhibits but also brings people together—locally rooted and internationally open.

Six decades ago,

 Gino Walz designed a frame made from a single continuous length of high-quality bent chrome tubing—clean, precise, and far ahead of its time. Inspired by his Italian roots and the evolution of tubular steel design, and drawing on the creative spirit of the Bauhaus.

Today, his daughter Romaine Kuonen-Walz is having this form faithfully recreated in Bern to the highest standards of quality. The tabletop is crafted at Spazio Walz: each one a unique piece—handmade with meticulous care and featuring an artistically distinctive design.

This collaboration enables the further evolution of the designs for the tabletops. Each tabletop is a unique work of art—a piece that creates a stunning effect in a living room, garden, or salon. The works play with the way light falls and shifts, opening up an exciting realm of surprises.

The two artists have been collaborating in the visual arts since 2022. Hadi contributes his expertise in Iranian design aesthetics; together, they develop ways to reinterpret this heritage through their table designs.

In a State of Becoming

A solo show at Spazio Walz

This solo exhibition unites sculptures, paintings, and text-based works into a large- scale installation that explores processes of transformation, transience, and becoming. Instead of presenting the works as finished objects, the exhibition invites visitors to encounter them as continuously evolving situations, activated through interaction, performance, and dialogue.

This exhibition offers the first opportunity to present a comprehensive selection of recent works in Bern. It brings together works created over several years and connects them within a coherent curatorial concept. At the same time, it creates a framework to deepen the dialogue between my artistic practice and the public, as well as to foster new connections between the individual works within the shared exhibition space.

A central aim of the project is art education and the active involvement of the public. Accompanying the exhibition is a program of events including guided tours, readings of the artist’s own texts, and performances that activate the installation and invite visitors to experience the works through shared dialogue.

Bio

Laura Arminda Kingsley is a Dominican artist born in the USA and residing in Switzerland. Drawing on evolutionary biology, deep time, microbiology, and diasporic mythologies, her artistic practice envisions a humanity that recognizes its connection to nature while simultaneously questioning colonial constructions of “race,” gender, and division.

As part of the closing event of the 2024 Venice Biennale, Kingsley created the performance “Desblanqueamiento” on the Rio San Trovaso. Her public art has been presented at events such as Sculpture in the City in London (2021), Tableau Zurich (2023), and Twingi Land Art in Valais (2024). She has also participated in exhibitions at the Nairobi National Gallery (2026), Centro León in Santiago de los Caballeros (2026), Recovery Plan in Florence (2025), Centro Cultural de España in Santo Domingo (2025), VFO Zurich (2024), Helmhaus Zurich (2024), CICA Museum in Seoul (2021), Berkeley Art Center (2021), Kamene Art Center in Nairobi (2024), and the Aargauer Kunsthaus (2023 and 2021).

For her work she received, among other things, the Dorothy & George Saxe Fellowship (2012 and 2014), the art studio grant of the city of Dübendorf and the LOCUS Micro-Grant (2021).
